We have a new house guest! Four of them, actually, and they are not shy at all! Meet the squirrel family living in the alcove above our bedroom window. They’re very cute, but I’m afraid they will chew right through the attic floor and right into the bedroom, which is something Pigpen (the kitty) would love!

When we moved from Boston to the sticks (way down the South Shore), we thought squirrels were cute, too. They wanted to live in our shed over the winter and made their way in through a gap in the roof. Awww. They’re so cute! And it’s so cold outside (this was that super-cold winter a few years ago).
Well…. These cute animals tore up every piece of fabric they could get their hands on. They chewed up and threw almost all the plastic. They gnawed on all the wooden stuff. Forget about cardboard. All of this activity was geared to building nests, or maybe boredom. Oh, did I mention the pounds of feces they left over the winter? Tiny pellets of squirrel poop everywhere they opened up.
Once they make a home, they are hard to dissuade from relocating. I’ve sealed off the shed with metal mesh.
Get an exterminator now while there’s still time.

An exterminator? That seems a little harsh! Besides, it’s not like another family won’t just move into the vacatetd alcove.

Update: The squirrels are really big now and are still there! They’ve stopped making the chewing noise, so I’ve stopped complaining about them. I’m not too concerned about the apartment: I lovingly refer to it as “the crack house” (cuz it looks like one), we think our landlord is really a slum lord and I don’t plan on staying for very long.
As for the picture… yes, he is looking right at me and he actually reached out to grab the camera after I took that picture! (there was a window pane between us of course)

Great meeting you last night.
I hate squirrels. They ate into my attic and could have chewed on the wires of our house and burnt it down.
They must be removed.
